I always liked slow days at the store. It meant I could spend time chatting with Eva. As a twenty-year-old, Eva always had wild tales to share from her life as a college student, and today was no different. “So anyway, I wake up, totally hungover, remembering nothing. I’m looking around the room, trying to figure out what happened.”
“That must have been a weird feeling.”
“Sure was. My roommate Nova walks in and goes, ‘Last night was lots of fun, wasn’t it?’ And I’m like, ‘Um…I guess so.’ Then she says, ‘Yeah, I had no idea you were so good with your hands.’ ”
I gasped. “You mean, you and her…?”
“Well…then she goes, ‘Yeah, you’re the best Charades player I ever met.’ And I breathe this sigh of relief. But before she leaves the room, she turns to me and says, ‘Oh, by the way, my boyfriend says you’re a great kisser.’ ”
We held our sides from the laughter. I wiped a tear from the side of my eye. Sometimes I wondered if she embellished just to be able to tell a better story, but either way wouldn’t surprise me. There didn’t seem to be much she wouldn’t try once.
I shook my head. “I swear, listening to your stories makes we want to go back and get another college degree, if only to have some more stories to tell.”
“I’m starting to feel like you owe me one,” she said.
“What do you mean? I owe you a story?”
“Sure. I’m always sharing salacious details about my life. It’s about time I get a few from you.”
“Oh, come on. I’m not as young as you anymore. Ted and I have our five year anniversary coming up in a few days.”
“Yeah, that’s what they all say. People act like the libido dies out a few years after you tie the knot. But I think you’re holding out on me.”
With a playful lift of my eyebrow, I leaned forward, voice hushed. “Okay, here’s something, but I need you to keep this just between the two of us.”
