“So Mrs. Newlywed, how are you and the new husband getting along?” Sandy asked.

Julie attempted a smile. “Just fine. The new house is great. Our honeymoon in the Bahamas was lovely.”

Sandy shook her head. “That’s not what I’m asking. I want to know how things are going in the bedroom. Is he bringing you to orgasm-land on a nightly basis?”

Julie blushed. “Sandy!”

Sandy’s way of being blunt always made her fun to be around. Lunch with her at the newsroom was never boring. But her efforts to liven up the conversation made Julie uneasy. “You know, I think we need to get back to work. I’m waiting on a phone call from a witness in that robbery on Pierce Street.”

Sandy’s face warmed into a grin. “Hmm. I think I’ve found something. What’s his secret? Is he into BDSM? Elderly women? Butt plugs?”

“Always chasing the story, aren’t you? Do you ever take your reporter’s hat off?”

“My reporter’s hat stays on as long as it matches my earrings. As for stories, I only chase them when I can sniff out an interesting lead. And I get the feeling there’s something here worth chasing.” Sandy leaned closer, waiting for Julie to break. “Come on, honey. What are you hiding?”

Julie studied her friend’s eager face. They’d been friends since college and shared many juicy secrets. But this one was a little awkward, so she kept it hidden. “Everything’s fine, Sandy. Now can I get back to work or do you want me to take a polygraph?”

With her face slanted into a sneer, Sandy didn’t seem convinced. She tossed her hands in the air in a mocking “surrender” gesture. “Okay. If you say everything’s cool, I suppose I have to take your word for it.”

Julie rose from the table. “Great. We’ll talk later.”

Sandy stopped her. “But don’t forget that I taught you everything you know about reporting. If there’s anything you’re hiding, I’ll dig it up.”

“Dig all you want. There’s nothing to find.” But she knew that wasn’t true. She wondered how long it would take for Sandy to uncover the embarrassing truth. And deep down, part of Julie hoped she would–because the truth was just as much of a mystery to her.
